It's driving me mad. Post Merged, Oct 7, 2017 ---Ok, I've just had the same problem with an old Iphone 4. I use a 6 and that has no problem connecting to my wi-fi network. The modem i use offers 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz connections together, to get the iphone 4 to connect i had to go into my modem settings and temporarily disable to 5.0GHz connection leaving just the 2.4GHz. Then type the password into my iphone 4 and hey presto, connected. I then went back into my modem settings, reconnected my 5.0GHz connection and everything is as it should be with both my 6 and 4 connected to wi-fi. It appears on the face of it that the 4's and the 5's keep coming up 'invalid password entered' and won't connect while the 5.0GHz option is available, so switch it off, connect to the 2.4GHz.
Worked for me on every other 4 and 5.
